Networking and Following UpBy
Today I just wanted to write a quick post about meeting people and following up.
As an entrepreneur, you’ve probably found that one of the best ways to build your business, at least at the beginning, is with face-to-face networking opportunities. They work incredibly well for me, as they do for many other people I know.
If they aren’t working for you 1 of a few possible things could be going wrong.
Problem: You aren’t getting out enough.
Solution: Get off your tush and find some networking opportunities. They’re not all equal – so some will be good and some won’t. That’s ok, just get out there.
Problem: You aren’t meeting people in a way that will work once you are at the event.
Solution: When you get to an event, don’t look at people as potential clients. Look at them as interesting individuals that you want to connect with and get to know. They’ll feel the difference and want to get to know you too.
Problem: You do everything right at the meeting, and head home with a few business cards in hand. Then they sit on your desk. And sit and sit and sit.
Solution: When you schedule an event in you calendar, also schedule an hour or so the following day (or within 2-3 days) to sit down with those business cards, follow the people on social media, friend them on Facebook and reach out directly. It’s often really great to either set up a 1-on-1 phone call or even a face-to-face visit to continue to build a real relationship.
Of course, networking and building relationships isn’t only about these things, but they’re the biggest pit-falls I’ve seen people fall into in the past.
