The 3 M’s of Marketing – And Maybe a 4th?

If you’ve been hanging around the entrepreneurial world for a while, then this may be review for you, but it will probably be new to some people.

In marketing, there is a foundation known as ‘The 3 Ms’ – which are:

  1. Market
  2. Message
  3. Medium

Different people have different ideas on order for these 3, some people create a triangle and say you need all three points (that’s true) and some people think that if you work on your marketing in the order I listed the M’s, you’ll get better results than under any other circumstances.

Ultimately, the most important thing is that you get all three covered – THOROUGHLY.

And, to me, it generally is easier to start by doing some work with both 1 and 2. It’s hard to get really clear on a message without knowledge about your market, and to some degree, you need to know a little bit about what you want to say to know who will be interested.

Those 2 go hand-in-hand, and it’s pretty hard to work on 1 without spending time figuring out the other.

That being said, the final step remains, at least for me, the medium. Sometimes you might tweak your message for particular media, but you must know who you want to share your message with, and the basics of your message, or selecting successful media for distribution will prove to be more like rocket science.

So, what’s this 4th M I’m talking about?

Well… I’m going to do a bit of a dastardly thing and I’m not going to tell you right now…

Hint #1 – It’s something that is at the basis of all success, when it comes right down to it, but it plays a very particular and critical role in marketing.

Hint #2 – As I’ve worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs over the years, I’ve begun to move a bit more into some different areas as I approach my work. Figuring this out was one of the keys to helping my clients create bigger and bigger success.
